How to use Add text

What it does

Add a single line of text, such as a caption or a title, on top of a video. You set the size, color and position of the text, and you can also choose when it shows. The video is processed on your device and is not uploaded.

Step by step

  1. Drop a video file onto the page, or click to choose one.
  2. On the “Text” tab, type your text into the “Text” field. It can be up to 80 characters.
  3. Set “Text size (% of video height)” and “Text color”. Choose from White, Black, Yellow or Orange. “Background box behind text” is “On” by default.
  4. On the “Place & time” tab, press one of the nine spots under “Align”, or drag the text on the video to move it. Drag a corner of the text to change its size. You can also type pixel values into “Horizontal” and “Vertical”.
  5. To choose when the text shows, type times into “Start” and “End”, or drag the two ends on the timeline. Write times as minutes:seconds, like 0:05 or 1:02.5. If you leave them as they are, the text shows for the whole video.
  6. Click “Add text”. When it finishes, use “Save” to download the file, or “Keep going” to pass it to another tool.

Frequently asked questions

Can the text show for only part of the video?
Yes. On the “Place & time” tab, type times into “Start” and “End”, or drag the two ends on the timeline, to set the range. Outside that range the text does not appear.
The text won't get any bigger.
It can only grow as far as the text still fits in the width of the video. With fewer characters, you can make it bigger.
The “Add text” button can't be clicked.
This happens when no text has been typed, or when the size of the video could not be read. Type some text and it can be clicked. If the video size couldn't be read, try a different video.
