How to use Trim

What it does

Cut a video down to the part you want to keep and save it as a new file. Set a start and an end, and only what lies between them stays. The video is processed on your device and is not uploaded.

Step by step

  1. Drop a video file onto the page, or click to choose one.
  2. Drag the two handles on the timeline, or type times into the “Start”, “End” and “Length” fields on the “Range” tab. Write times as minutes:seconds, like 0:05 or 1:02.5.
  3. While the video plays, press I to make the current position the start, or O to make it the end. Playback stops at the end point.
  4. On the “Method” tab, choose “Precise” or “Fast” under “Trim mode”. The default is “Precise”.
  5. Click “Trim”. When it finishes, use “Save” to download the file, or “Keep going” to pass it to another tool.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does the quality drop?
“Fast” copies the original as it is, so it does not touch the quality. “Precise” re-encodes, so the result is not exactly identical to the original.
The cut point is a little off from the time I set.
In “Fast” mode the start may move up to 2 seconds earlier. If you need the exact point, use “Trim precisely”.
My video won't open.
If the browser can't open the format, a message says so. Convert the video to a common format like MP4 or MOV and choose it again.
