How to use Word to text
What it does
Turns a Word document (.docx) into Markdown, HTML or plain text. It reads headings, lists, tables, links, and bold and italic text. When you open the file, the converted text shows in the box right away.
Step by step
Drop a Word file (.docx) onto the screen, or click to choose one.
In the “Format” tab, under “Save as”, pick “Markdown”, “HTML” or “Text”. It starts on “Markdown”. The text in the box changes as soon as you pick.
Click “Convert to Markdown”. For HTML and text the buttons are “Convert to HTML” and “Convert to text”.
Check the result in the box, and use “Copy” to copy it.
To get a file, click “Save”. The file name is the original name plus “-converted”, ending in .md, .html or .txt.
Good to know
Markdown turns headings into #, lists into -, and tables into pipe tables. The first row of a table becomes the header row, and merged cells are split, not merged.
Images are kept only in HTML. HTML packs the images into the file, so with many images the file gets large. Markdown and text leave images out, and the “Good to know” tab tells you how many were left out.
Text keeps only the words, with no formatting. List items start with “•” or a number, and table cells are split by tabs.
Fonts, colours, font sizes, page layout, headers and footers are not kept. If anything was skipped while reading, the “Good to know” tab shows how many notices there were, and you can open it to see the list. The notices are in English.
Old .doc files can't be opened. Open the file in Word, choose Save As, save it as a Word Document (.docx), and add that. Files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Can it convert .doc files?
No. .doc is an old file type that it can't read. Open the file in Word, save it as .docx, and add that. A file with a password works the same way: remove the password, save it, and add it.
Are images saved too?
If you save as HTML, the images are packed into the file. Markdown and text leave images out.
What happens to tables?
In Markdown they become pipe tables. In text they become lines with the cells split by tabs. Merged cells are split, not merged.
