How to use CSV to Excel
What it does
Turns a CSV file into an Excel (.xlsx) file. The delimiter and the text encoding (UTF-8, EUC-KR) are detected automatically.
Step by step
Drop a CSV file onto the screen, or click to choose one. Once it opens, it is read and the first rows are shown in a table. Above the table you see the encoding that was read and the number of rows and columns.
“Delimiter” starts on “Auto”. If the columns split wrongly, pick comma, semicolon or tab yourself.
“Bold first row” starts on. While it is on, the first row is written in bold.
Click “Convert to Excel”, then “Save”.
Good to know
The file name is the original name with “-converted” added, and the extension is .xlsx. The sheet name is the CSV file’s name.
It reads as UTF-8 first. If the file is not UTF-8, it reads it as EUC-KR (CSV made on Korean Windows). If the file starts with a UTF-16 mark, it reads it as UTF-16. If the text looks broken, save the original as UTF-8 and drop it again.
Numbers are saved as numbers. Values that start with 0 (0012), phone numbers and numbers of 16 digits or more stay as text so they don’t change. Dates stay as text. No formulas or formatting are made.
One Excel sheet holds up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. If the file is larger, you are told and no file is made.
The table shows only the first 50 rows. The saved file has every row.
The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to a server.
Frequently asked questions
The Korean text looks broken.
A file that is not UTF-8 is read as EUC-KR. If it still looks broken, save the original as UTF-8 in the program that made it and drop it again.
The columns are split in the wrong places.
With “Delimiter” on “Auto”, it guesses from the first lines. If it guesses wrong, pick comma, semicolon or tab yourself. The table changes right away.
Do numbers that start with 0 stay as they are?
Yes. Values that start with 0, phone numbers and numbers of 16 digits or more are saved as text, so they don’t change.
