How to use Excel viewer
What it does
Opens Excel files (.xlsx, .xls) and CSV files and lets you browse them sheet by sheet. It only shows the file: nothing is changed or created.
Step by step
Drop an Excel or CSV file onto the screen, or click to choose one. While the file opens, “Opening the document” is shown.
Click a sheet name under the table to switch sheets. The table has column names (A, B, C) and row numbers, which stay in place as you scroll.
Click a cell to see its address and value in the bar above the table. A cell with a formula shows “Formula” and “Value” separately. After clicking the table, you can also move between cells with the arrow keys, PageUp, PageDown, Home and End.
Type in “Find in sheet” and every cell in the current sheet that contains the text is tinted. Press Enter for the next match and Shift+Enter for the previous one. The “Previous match” and “Next match” buttons do the same.
In “File info” on the right, see the number of sheets, the rows and columns of the current sheet, and the file size.
Good to know
Column widths and merged cells are shown as saved in the file. Merged cells appear as one joined cell.
Numbers and dates appear the way Excel shows them. Formulas are not recalculated: the value last saved in the file is shown.
Formatting such as colors and fonts, charts, pictures and macros are not shown. If the file has charts, pictures or macros, you are told how many. Macros are never run. Hidden rows and columns are not hidden here.
Text longer than a cell is cut at the cell’s edge. Click the cell to read all of it in the bar above.
Only the rows and columns in view are drawn. A CSV opens as a single sheet, and its delimiter and encoding (UTF-8, EUC-KR) are detected automatically.
Under “What you can do with this file”, an Excel file links to “Excel to CSV” and a CSV file links to “CSV to Excel”. The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Can it open a password-protected Excel file?
No. It tells you “This file is password protected”. Remove the password in Excel, save the file again and upload it.
A formula result differs from what I saw in Excel.
Formulas are not recalculated; the value saved in the file is shown. A value that changed before the last save in Excel may not be included.
I can’t see colors or charts.
Formatting such as colors and fonts, charts and pictures are not shown. Only values, formulas, merged cells and column widths are read. If the file has charts or pictures, “File info” tells you how many.
