How to use PDF to Markdown

What it does

Pulls the text out of a PDF and saves it as a .md file, keeping headings, lists and paragraphs. Pictures are not included; only text comes out.

Step by step

  1. Drop a PDF onto the screen, or click to choose one. Once it opens, the text is read and shown in the box.
  2. On the “Markdown” tab, pick “Run on” or “Add a rule” under “Between pages”. It starts on “Run on”.
  3. Click “Convert to Markdown”.
  4. Check the result in the box, and click “Copy” to copy it.
  5. To get a file, click “Save”. The file name is the original name with “-markdown” added, and the extension is .md.

Frequently asked questions

Can a scanned PDF be turned into Markdown?
Not directly. In a scanned PDF the text is a picture, so there is no text to pull out. Run OCR first to get a PDF that has text, then use this.
What happens to tables in the PDF?
They don’t become tables. The text inside a table comes out as lines and paragraphs in reading order.
Are the headings accurate?
They are guessed from text size, so they can be wrong. Check the headings and lists in the result box once.
